A big bulk of WHEN YOU WISH UPON A CHIPMUNK is fluff. Super sweet pop versions of Disney tunes with annoying voices. But if you grew up through the 80s and 90s watching a lot of Alvin and the Chimpunks on TV like I did, you will probably enjoy this track.
At first this may sound like an exact rip off of the original version of Under the Sea with squeaky vocals, and to some extent that may be true. But the strong rock star-esque strength of the lead, the high-pitched vibrato and the powerful harmonies are indicative of THE CHIPMUNKS and I can't help but smile just a little bit when listening to it.
In 1995, THE CHIPMUNKS released an album of Disney covers. Some of you may say "Neat! I love the Chipmunks!" But please hold off until you hear some of these tracks. Most of them are nothing but high pitched versions of the originals with little or no extra creativity.
However, there are a few tracks that stand out. The Chipmunk banter in Kiss the Girl turns this song from a romantic introduction of kindred spirits to a jovial bout of mockery by two younger brothers.
Here is another track from WHEN YOU WISH UPON A CHIPMUNK, an album of Disney songs in squeaky Chipmunk voices. This one is not as bad as the last although it is still not great.
THE CHIPMUNKS, voiced by their creator, Ross Bagdasarian, have made quite a career for themselves seeing as they were created as a one-off novelty act. Dozens of albums, a few tv series, a feature film! They started way back in 1958 and are still going strong today!
My favourite thing about the Chipmunks is that even though they are cartoon characters, they act like real actors. Their albums are recorded as if they are actual recording artists and their tv shows are like reality tv, following their careers (and other adventures).
I hope you like this track as it may be the only Friend Like Me cover you'll hear in a while. Aside from A Whole New World, Aladdin covers are pretty rare.
It's Terrible Track Friday and today I'm posting a track that is not only terrible, but also has a movie coming out today that looks equally as bad. That's right, it's the Chipmunks.
THE CHIPMUNKS were created in 1958 by Ross Bagdasarian when he wrote The Witch Doctor and sang it under the name David Seville. He used cutting edge technology to speed up the recording of the Witch Doctor's vocal track which gave it a 'chipmunk-sound'. The song was a suprising hit, peaking at #1 in the US for two weeks! It went on to win a Grammy Award for engineering!
Realizing the money making potential he had created, Bagdasarian began recording album after album, starting with the hit song The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late).
To date, the Chipmunks have released over 40 albums! Including WHEN YOU WISH UPON A CHIPMUNK in 1995 which features ten songs from Disney movies done in their trademark squeaky voices. The album has novelty value (as any cover album does), but this one gets boring after the first minute of the opening track, Hakuna Matata. And while some of the songs get new musical arrangements, this one sound exactly the same as the original except with vocals in a higher octave. Boring!
Take a listen and see for your self. It sounds just as bad as the trailer for the new movie looks.
Over the years, many musical artists have paid tribute to the music of Disney. This blog pays tribute to those artists.
You won't find any original Disney songs here, these are all covers, interpretations and variations on the tunes we all love.
