Can You Feel the Love Tonight - Neil Diamond

In the Bill Murray movie What About Bob? Bob explains that there are only two types of people in the world. "Those who like NEIL DIAMOND and those who don't."

I don't know which category you fall into, but there is no denying the popularity and success of this singer songwriter.

I'm making this post the unofficial sequel to yesterday's post by Jamie who mentioned that the Simba/Nala sequence during Can You Feel the Love Tonight is almost a mirror of the same events that happened in a much earlier Disney movie, Robin Hood.

Neil Diamond's version of the Elton John love ballad can be found on AS TIME GOES BY: THE MOVIE ALBUM, a two-disc set that Diamond released in 1998.

The album is full of movie song covers, however he turns the "Adult Contemporary" knob up to 11 and churns out the sappiest versions of already sappy movie love ballads such as Unchained Melody, As Time Goes By and My Heart Will Go On.

The highlight of this album is the fact that film score composer Elmer Bernstein, whose credits range from The Ten Commandments to Airplane, arranged all the music and conducted the 80 piece orchestra.

Overall, each track may sound pretty, and fans of Neil Diamond's voice will no doubt enjoy listening to his voice, but whole album really sounds like one big long song. Not too much variety. Take a listen to Can You Feel the Love Tonight and see for yourself.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight - Michelle Nicastro

One of the better tracks off of MICHELLE NICASTRO'S TOONFUL TOO album from 1995 is this cover of Can You Feel the Love Tonight. The rock ballad stays true to Elton John's original compassion yet gives way to allow Nicastro to bring in her own charm (and cheese).

Most covers of this song are quite bland, not straying too far from the Elton John original. However, this song, with its fake-out ending in the middle of the song and the use of a gospel choir, prevents Nicastro's version from being just another cheesy wannabe Can You Feel the Love Tonight cover song.

Circle of Life/Can You Feel the Love Tonight - Richard Page

Here is a short Lion King medley (or is it an Elton John medley?) of the two most popular tracks from the movie, Circle of Life and Can You Feel the Love Tonight. This medley is sung by RICHARD PAGE, lead sing of the 80s pop band MR. MISTER.

Mr. Mister had a successful run in the late 80s after releasing their second album WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD in 1985. The album hit #1 in 1986 as did their hit singles Broken Wings and Kyrie. After the band broke up in 1989, Page started writing music for other pop artists, including Kenny Loggins, Josh Groban, Meatloaf, Michael Jackson and Celine Dion, just to name a few.

If you grew up in the 80s there is no doubt that you know Mr. Mister, but did you know that before Richard Page became the lead singer of the group he turned down offers to be lead singer for Chicago and Toto? With both of those bands still going strong today I wonder if Page is regretting his decision to go with Mr. Mister.

For a medley, this one is pretty weak. I love medleys and really appreciate the transitions that tie one song to the next. But this song almost comes to a stop before jumping into Can You Feel. I would have liked to hear a little bit more creativity from this hit songwriter.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight - Jilien

I've had this album for a while but have not really wanted to post any of the track because they are not that great. The album is MOUSE HOUSE: DISNEY'S DANCE MIXES and features dance versions of Disney songs. The tracks are not actually remixes of the original songs but covers in a techno style. I'm not a big techno fan but I know many of you are so here is a track just for you!

And maybe you can help me out. I have no idea who Jilien is and a quick Google search has come up with nothing. If any of you techno fans are reading this, please pass on some info and some links about Jilien! Thanks!

Can You Feel the Love Tonight - William Hung

Every second Friday of the month I will post a cover that is just plain awful. I call this feature Terrible Track Friday. This is the very first week and I can't think of a better person to post than WILLIAM HUNG!

I'm sure everybody knows this American Idol reject. He couldn't make it past the auditions. But due to his sweet personality and his passion to do his best (and uber popularity on youtube singing Ricky Martin's She Bangs) Kosh Records gave him a contract to record a full album.

Since then he has appeared on countless talk shows, commercials, sporting events and other guest appearances. Not bad for a novelty act. His agent sure milked him for all he's worth! Since the release of INSPIRATION in 2004, Hung has also recorded a Chirstmas album and a third album! Will this never end?!

Hung's version of Elton John's Can You Feel the Love Tonight is just awful. He is just a plain bad singer. No ifs ands or buts. And if this isn't bad enough, Circle of Life and Tarzan's Two Worlds are also on this CD! Ahh!
