Hey everyone! Jamie from Fong Songs here. I'm absolutely thrilled Kurtis decided to make this Robin Hood Week since it's always been one of my favourite Disney films, due in no small part to its memorable songs.
In the world of Disney cover songs, Robin Hood is woefully underrepresented so I was delighted to discover a digital Disney cover album by a Nashville musician named BENJAMIN BAKER. The album, aptly named ACOUSTIFIED: DISNEY EDITION, features four Robin Hood covers including the rarely covered Phony King of England! In addition to a couple Jungle Book covers and Ev'rybody Wants to Be a Cat (another of my faves), Benjamin ventures into relatively obscure territory with cover songs from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and Hot Lead and Cold Feet. I've seriously never even heard of that last one, a comedy western from 1978 starring Don Knotts. Whoops, he also includes a cover of Edelweiss from The Sound of Music, which is not a Disney film... but that's okay since he has otherwise recorded a veritable treasure trove of Disney covers!
While several of the songs for Robin Hood were written and performed by Roger Miller, The Phony King of England (performed by Phil Harris as Little John) was written by Johnny Mercer who has written lyrics for numerous classic songs such as Moon River, Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive, and That Old Black Magic just to name a few.
