OLIVER WALLACE, composer for over 100 Disney shorts, over a dozen feature films, and many Disney documentaries, was born on this day in 1887!
Wallace can be best recognized these days through his 50s era feature film scores such as Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Lady and the Tramp. It was common practice to bring on several composers to work on one feature, but it was Wallace that took all the themes written for the production and brought them together in one seamless score. Most impressive in my mind is his score to Alice in Wonderland which consistently ties together melodies from the many songs written by the Sherman Brothers for that film.
Though his main work was scoring, Wallace also wrote a few songs that have become Disney classics - Pink Elephants on Parade, Der Fuehrer's Face and this one: Following the Leader (with lyrics by Ted Sears and Winston Hibler).
There aren't many covers of Following the Leader, and this one isn't that great, but it's the best I can do at this time. What we have here is a studio produced version featuring an unknown group of studio musicians. You can find it on a few different albums, including MICKEY'S PARTY SONGS
