Today is the 20th anniversary of the feature film based on one of my favourite childhood cartoons: DuckTales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp! Since the movie has only a tiny cult following and is only available on DVD through Disney's Movie Club, I'm guess that Covering the Mouse may be the only place you will find a celebration for film's anniversary!
This film, featuring the voices of Christopher Lloyd and Rip Taylor, is the first feature from Walt Disney Television Animation. It was released under the Disney MovieToons label which was created to produced new movies for old Disney properties. Treasure of the Lost Lamp bombed in the box office and MovieToons only released one other film, A Goofy Movie, before shutting down.
The low revenue also shelved an intended series of DuckTales movies, as well as a Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers feature film. As a big fan of the Disney Afternoon, I am sad that these will never see the light of day. It was also for this reason that A Goofy Movie shares little resemblance to Goof Troop.
I really enjoy this film, even though is is really nothing more than an extended episode of the series. The animation is just above par with what you see in the series, with only the first ten minutes looking like something worthy of a theatrical release. Oh well. I was nine and I loved it.
Today's cover is a punk-rock version of the DuckTales theme song by a band called ALTEREGO. They have recorded an entire album of TV show theme song covers that is available for free download off their webpage! Enjoy!

I loved this movie as a kid!
This update is awesome :)
I actually met one of the animators who worked on that film... and he got fired for doing too much work on it!
I'm surprised that the Duck Tales franchise didn't took off, especially as the characters were based of the popular Carl Barks comics. Oh well, for those who were in the acknowledgement of the franchise, it was pretty enjoyable while it lasted.
Man I loved this cartoon. It had such huge potential. I'm a part of that small cult following. I've even sat down with my son to watch some of the old episodes floating around online.
