Walt Disney Selection - George Scott-Wood

Our last stop on the Silly Symphony Week train is one of my favourite covers: A medley of classic Silly Symphony songs! Here's a rundown of what you'll hear in this medley:

  • Minnie's Yoo Hoo (from Mickey's Follies, 1929) - This one isn't a Silly Symphony song, but rather Mickey Mouse's theme. This serves as the intro as well as a bridging piece between songs.
  • See the Funny Little Bunnies (from Funny Little Bunnies, 1934)
  • The Penguin is a Very Funny Creature (from Peculiar Penguins, 1934)
  • Rats, Rats, Rats (from The Pied Piper, 1933)
  • The World Owes Me a Living (from The Grasshopper and the Ants, 1933)
  • Lullaby Land of Nowhere (from Lullaby Land, 1933)
  • Help Me Plant My Corn (from The Wise Little Hen, 1934)

One more song that you may recognize is the four-note pattern at the very beginning of the song under a poor imitation of Mickey Mouse. It sounds just like part of the Mickey Mouse March, but about 20 years before the Mickey Mouse Club television show would even be a thought in Walt Disney's head! Coincidence?

This song was arranged by Scottish bandleader GEORGE SCOTT-WOOD and performed by the SILLY SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA. I'm guessing that is not the actual name of the orchestra that you hear in the recording. I'm guessing that it is actually the NEW MAYFAIR NOVELTY ORCHESTRA, whom Scott-Wood recorded many records with in 1935. I'm also guessing that it is 1935 that this song was recorded since none of the songs in the medley are from later than that. Plus, the timing is right if this is indeed the New Mayfair Novelty Orchestra. If someone can confirm any of these fact, please leave a comment!

Scott-Wood later formed the Six Swingers which took the Great Britain dance scene by storm. He is also credited for bringing the piano accordion to Great Britain and would later form his own accordion dance band that featured nine accordions! (He himself would conduct from the piano.)

There are actually a number of Silly Symphony medleys and other covers that were recorded in the 30s, but I can't find any of them. Do you have any other Silly Symphony covers? Please let me know!

You can find a crackle-free version of this track on MUSIC FOR A TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS. I'm not sure why it's on a Christmas album, but oh well, at least it's available!

Despite the dodgy takes on the Disney characters, it sounds pretty faithful to the original songs featured in those shorts.
