I Will Go Sailing No More - Charlie Louvin

CHARLIE LOUVIN comes from the old school of country music. He and his brother Ira played the Tennessee radio circuit in the 40s.

Their career really picked up after WWII when they became members of the Grand Ole Opry, the biggest showcase of country music since the 20s. The Louvin Brothers became a hit and they released several albums between the 50s and early 60s.

As their popularity waned the Brothers split in 1963. Ira was killed in a car crash in 1965, leaving Charlie to carry on with his solo career with no hope of a reunion.

Charlie's solo career lasted for another 20 years and he stopped recording in the late 80s. But in the past few years he has been making a comeback of sorts. In 2003, he recorded I Will Go Sailing No More for the Disney bluegrass album, O MICKEY, WHERE ART THOU. The song is filled with sorrow and longing. He sweet baritone voice really conveys the hurt he must have felt after his brother died.

O Mickey, Where Art Thou is now out of print (although it is still easy, and cheap, to track down), but Disney has released the exact same album under the title DISNEY ADVENTURES IN BLUEGRASS.

Nice and sad...But at the end of the song there's a bit of hope rising above all sadness

This is a lovely version of the song. It's even just as, or even more, memorable as the original was, which is probably the highest praise I think you can bestow onto any cover.

To me it's not terribly sad, it's that kind of sweet nostalgic kind of sad, holding the happiness you had even though you miss those times. Anyway, what an expressive voice, it's nice--I agree, much more memorable than the original.
