A big happy birthday to Sir Elton John who turns 63 today! I'm sure I don't need to tell you that Elton John supplied all the songs, along with lyricist Tim Rice, for The Lion King. Three out of five of the songs nominated for Best Original Song Oscar were from this movie - Circle of Life, Can You Feel the Love Tonight and Hakuna Matata. Can You Feel the Love Tonight eventually went on to win.
Out of all the songs in The Lion King, I think Circle of Life is my favourite. While Elton John's radio version is great, I much prefer the version heard in the movie, sung by Carmen Twillie with that incredible introduction by Lebo M sung in his native isiZulu tongue.
In this version of Circle of Life, you will hear an extended introduction performed by the cast of The Lion King Musical in London. This is a live recording taken from a concert from a few years ago hosted by Josh Groban. The event was called BBC RADIO 2 CELEBRATES THE MUSIC OF DISNEY and features the BBC Concert Orchestra and various Broadway and West End stars from Disney theatre musicals.
