In February of 2002, R&B artist USHER won the Grammy Award for 'Best Male R&B Vocal Performance' so it made sense for Disney to ask him to be a part of DISNEYMANIA, the first volume in a series of albums devoted to Disney cover songs. The track Usher covers here is the Phil Collins version of You'll Be in My Heart from Tarzan.
The song, about the strong bond that love can have between two people, has become very popular in the mainstream world. Phil Collins' powerful drums mixed with the gentile melody and lyrics made it an anthem for those who are forced to leave loved one behind.
Usher's treatment to the song is very appropriate. The R&B drum tracks and guitar work keep the feel of the song but compliment Usher's style perfectly. Usher has a great voice and he uses it perfectly here. His talent is being able to show off by not showing off. He keeps it simple and tasteful.
Suemitsu Atsushi is a wonderful composer/pianist/vocalist who may be best known for composing and performing the main theme to the anime, Nodame Cantabile. In 2004 Suemitsu took part in part of the Japanese Disney project, MOSH PIT ON DISNEY under the moniker SUEMITSU & THE SUEMITH.
SUEMITSU & THE SUEMITH became a big hit due to the exposure from this album and in 2006 he released his first album, MAN HERE PLAYS MEAN PIANO.
The track he recorded for MOSH PIT ON DISNEY is Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid. His Billy-Joel-like piano playing and upbeat tempos have turned this from a song of longing into a song of determination. It is a great cover and one of the best on this album.
Click on the following albums for a sample of what you will hear on the disc.
Please note: The albums listed below are ones devoted to Disney cover tunes or at least include four or five covers. You will not find listings for albums that only contain one or two covers. Try searching for the artist instead.
FRIDAY FEATURES: Friday is a special day at Covering the Mouse. Each week will feature a different theme that will bring some enjoyment as you start your weekend.
Request Weeks: On the first and fifth Fridays I will be taking your requests! Please leave your requests here or here and I will do my best to accommodate you.
Terrible Tracks: On the second Friday of the month I will be posting a cover version that not only is a terrible version of the original, but is also just a plain bad track. William Hung's version of Can You Feel the Love Tonight comes to mind. Terrible Tracks Archive
When You Wish Upon a Star Week: It seem like everyone has covered When You Wish Upon a Star. I have enough versions of this song to post every Friday for the next year. But rather than bore you I will only post on the third Friday of every month.
THEME WEEKS: Every so often a whole week (Monday to Thursday actually) will be devoted to a particular theme. They may be about a certain movie, musical theme, holiday, special event, or maybe focus on one song. But they will always be fun and informative. Theme weeks will happen once a month.
